I sometimes wonder what it takes to create something so good like Chernobyl. The enormity of the tragedy, the gradual builds up to the disaster, the sheer helplessness of the displaced people and animals, the science behind the reactor and of course the bizarre cleanup process. All of it finds their place in the end. The show masterfully avoids the trap of being confusing and too much pessimistic, rather it builds up, puts forth a gripping and immersive storyline, capable of making you eagerly wait till the end. The class acts from the leading casts, the crisp and top-notch dialogues and the pace is so right, so perfectly blended into an organic whole. Most importantly this show through its profoundness, science, warning, bravery, and sacrifices speak to us in the most human language possible. A show depicting a gigantic arrangement of deaths so effortlessly becomes about life and beauty and truth and tenderness. In the end, the stories break your heart but also make you salute people’s courage in the face of insurmountable odds. The show’s emotional core is so pure and so honest that it touches you at levels beyond your own immediate grasps.
This is undoubtedly one of HBO’s best creations, highly recommended.
