That is the exact question the teenage boys of Wellton academy had asked their English professor Mr Keating. Deads Poets Society is a 1989 American teen comedy-drama film, starring Robin Williams. The movie is set in 1959 at the fictional elite conservative Vermont boarding school Welton Academy. It tells the story of an English teacher who inspires his students through his teaching of poetry.
The school has a set of rules and follows strict discipline throughout the year. However, this new English professor does not fit into the set of rules. The unorthodox English professor takes the students by surprise. The movie beautifully narrates how an ideal teacher should be. The movie even this year is relatable due to this one fact. Dead Poets Society depicts the beautiful relationship between a teacher and a student.
Moreover, the film has some beautiful poetry reading which is just like a cherry on top. After all these years, some of us might have lost touch with the actors. Here’s where they are now
John Keating/Robin Williams
Williams gave one of the most iconic performances as Keating and went on to receive more praise for his work. Although this character of his was a jolly, full of life man, he had an opportunity to work as a different character. He got other roles like Awakenings and Good Will Hunting. He also won an Oscar for his work in Boston set drama Good Will Hunting in 1998. However, he tragically died in 2014 at the age of 63.
Todd Anderson/Ethan Hawke
Prior to playing Todd Anderson in Dead poets society, Ethan appeared in the family-friendly sci-fi adventure ‘Explorers.’ He went on to become a movie star in movies such as Generation X drama ‘Reality Bites’. He also starred in the Oscar-winning crime thriller ‘Training Day’. Hawke, now 48, has collected four Academy Award nominations in the 30 years since Dead Poets Society premiered.
Neil Perry/Robert Sean Leonard
Before playing Neil Perry in the film, Robert starred in two feature films, the sci-fi thriller ‘The Manhattan Project’ and the outlandish comedy ‘My Best Friend Is a Vampire.’ Leonard is best known as Dr James Wilson, best friend of the genius, character of ‘House M.D.’ The popular and critically-acclaimed show ran for eight seasons.
Knox Overstreet/Josh Charles
Charles made his screen debut in 1988 with a minor role in the John Waters cult classic ‘Hairspray.’ Charles recently won acclaim on television for his work as a series regular in the drama ‘The Good Wife.’ His latest role on Law & Order True Crime is about the Menendez brother’s murders.
Charlie “Nuwanda” Dalton, Gale Hansen
Before leaving his mark with the iconic line “Damn it, Neil, the name is Nuwanda,” Hansen made his screen debut with a bit part in the Oscar-nominated Woody Allen mockumentary ‘Zelig.’ Today, he is a proud father of two and VP of Creative Affairs for Relativity Media, which recently co-produced the Oscar-nominated musical drama ‘Les Miserables.’
