Henry Wadsworth Longfellow‘s son decided to enlist to the Army against the wishes of his family. Wadsworth was a poet who wrote against wars. But much against his philosophy of peace and union, his own son decided to go fight in the war. The beloved poet was greatly saddened by this incident.
Soon after, his wife passes away in an accident. After loosing his wife ,Henry Wadsworth becomes more deeply saddened.
He become so grief stricken his wife’s passing and his son’s enlistment in the Union Army that he temporarily put his writing on hold. The famous writer who moved people’s heart with his powerful words almost gives up on his writing. It is until Christmas comes once again and the bells are heard by him.
I Heard the Bells will concentrate on that time in Longfellow’s life and the victory that followed when he once again picked up a pen to create the poem Christmas Bells that remains with us even after his death years ago.
