Prisoners of the Ghostland, a fantasy action film starring Nicolas Cage as a bank robber tasked with rescuing the niece of the power-crazed Governor from a cursed netherworld, is an absurd proposition even before you learn that it is directed by Sion Sono, undoubtedly the most demented person working in Japanese cinema. However, despite its deranged Mad Max meets Monty Python visual and Cage’s most OTT performance in a long time (plenty of flared lips and clenched teeth), Prisoners quickly transitions from a nutty distraction to an endurance test of lavish wackiness.

Prisoners of the Ghostland is a 2021 American neo-noir Western action film. On January 31, 2021, the film made its global premiere at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival. RLJE Films released the picture in theatres and on video-on-demand on September 17, 2021. The film received largely mixed to good reviews from critics.

The film follows Maddie, who has begun to have visions of killings performed by a dark entity. However, as the film progresses, Some films don’t seem inevitable until they’re created. The most ludicrous aspect of Sion Sono’s “Prisoners of the Ghostland,” a sukiyaki psych-Western starring Nicolas Cage as a felon on a mission to rescue a fleeing girl from a post-apocalyptic wasteland before the bombs linked to his balls explode, is that it didn’t previously exist. Review Of Prisoners of the Ghostland

The film is set in the perilous frontier metropolis of Samurai Town, where a brutal bank robber is freed by wealthy warlord The Governor, whose adopted granddaughter Bernice has gone missing. In exchange for retrieving the runaway, the Governor grants the prisoner his freedom. Strapped inside a leather suit that will self-destruct in three days, the bandit sets out to find the young woman and his own route to atonement.

It begins as it intends to continue. Cage is The Hero, possibly a second cousin to Tenet’s The Protagonist, and viewers first see him storm into a bank, clutching a shotgun and yelling, “BANZAI!” at the top of his lungs. Imprisoned, he is released by The Governor (Bill Moseley), the white-suited dictator of (the highly stylized) Samurai Town who needs a favor: his gang of geishas, including his granddaughter Bernice (Sofia Boutella), have fled town and he now wants them back. But, as Han Solo says as the TIE Fighters approach, “here is where the fun begins.”

To begin, The Hero is compelled to wear a leather bodysuit stitched with explosives and programmed to “recognize the inclination of a guy eager to hit a helpless woman.” More excitingly, the bombs are stitched to his nuts in order to prevent him from tampering with the Governor’s property. And you don’t have to be a screenwriting genius to figure out that if Nicolas Cage has a bomb tied to his balls near the beginning of Act One, it’s only a matter of time before his gonads explode.

Prisoners Of The Ghostland is packed with weird twists and turns. The film takes off in all directions after a solid set-up premise. Just at the point where The Hero is seen as a messianic figure, it finds even more weird tangents.
