Minnal Murali is a rare superhero attempt from India, available on Netflix. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there are exactly seven good villains (one more if you count the shows). That’s a dismal strike rate for a franchise that spans 27 films and has had more than a decade to improve. You’d think that blunders like this would teach them a lesson, but for every Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings or Black Panther, there are a dozen more like Ant-Man and the Wasp or Thor: The Dark World. The Marvel Villain Problem, which also infected the latest Spider-Man: No Way Home, has become a collective term for this repeating offense.

Therefore, the majority of the flashbacks are filled with melodrama and individuals wailing about their tragic pasts, which gradually becomes uncomfortable. Minnal Murali is far too talkative at the moment. It has no faith in the people who are watching it. A character will retell a recent event. A character’s sentiments or thinking will be dictated through a song or voiceover. Minnal Murali will eventually swing to a montage if it is incapable of writing scenes.
Minnal Murali is overconfident in its spoon-feeding at times and overambitious to a fault. Still, it’s encouraging, because India could use some local superheroes. While Indians are enamored with American superheroes, they have historically shown little interest in domestic fare. Bhavesh Joshi Superhero, Vikramaditya Motwane’s 2018 effort, was a commercial flop. Furthermore, Netflix India has never released a sequel to any of its films. For a Minnal Murali 2 to materialize, something utterly unforeseen will have to happen.
