The new movie Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms is an adult animated martial arts film based on the Mortal Kombat franchise that was released in August 2021. Mortal Kombat II was a huge hit in the arcades when it first came out in 1993. It took the first game and improved the gameplay while adding additional gore and dark comedy to the mix. After Shang Tsung’s failure in the Mortal Kombat tournament, Battle of the Realms follows up where Scorpion’s Revenge left off, with an Outworld invasion of Earthrealm commanded by an enraged Shao Kahn. But the invasion is short-lived, as Shao Kahn proposes, you guessed it, another Mortal Kombat tournament. There are also other completely unrelated subplots involving Lin Kuei and the cyber initiative; Kuai Liang’s desire for vengeance against Scorpion for the murder of his brother; Shinnok’s scheming in the netherrealm to retrieve the kamidogu, and it’s all a lot, especially for a film with a run-time of less than 90 minutes.
It appears that four Mortal Kombat Legends films might have been made, each focusing on a different storyline, but instead, they were all mashed together into a single film, making every character feel bland. Battle of the Realms’ visuals are likewise hit-or-miss. The surroundings are stunning, and they do an excellent job of recreating the appearance of locations from the games, such as Lin Kuei Temple from MKX and Kahn’s Arena from MK2. Character designs are significantly more divisive, with extremely angular faces and chins that are often as pointed as the weapons they wield. I’m not a huge fan of the stylized design, but I can see how well it works with the ultra-violence.
As a result, all of the character moments fall flat, resulting in a film that is essentially simply about the action and fanservice, and it succeeds in both areas. However, any Mortal Kombat fan will appreciate the gnarly moments of over-the-top violence, and Joel McHale as Johnny Cage continues to be a wonderful voice casting choice for the loud Hollywood star who’s in well over his head.
Though there are some rough edges, the animation performs its job well enough, with some enjoyable combat choreography that is full of subtle nods and references to the game.
