Netflix’s dropped the new web series A Suitable Boy set in newly post-independence, post-partition India released on October 23, 2020. 

The Suitable Boy was directed by Mira Nair and adapted by Andrew Davies from the best-selling Vikram Seth’s novel published in 1993. The series stars Tanya Maniktala, Ishaan Khatter, Tabu, Ram Kapoor, Namit Das, Rashika Dugal. 

The Suitable Boy is the tale of modernity confronts the tradition in post-partition India where Lata the girl of 19 years refuses to arrange marriage who is forced to choose her husband between her suitors Kabir, Haresh, and Amit.

The story also focuses on the romantic and forbidden love of Lata brother in law Maan with Muslim courtesan, Saeeda Bai.

Set during the 1950s, the series comprised of six-mini-series tells the story of a young girl’s follow his own heart and identity in a newly independent, post-Partition India defining its future.

What is the plot of the series? 

The story is set in a town called Brahmpur in north India against the backdrop of a newly independent India. The story revolves around the 19-year-old Lata Mehra, who is an old Literature student.

 Lata’s older sister Savita followed the traditional path of arrange marriage and engaged with Pran Kapoor. Her typical mother Rupa, is determined to find a suitable boy for her young daughter as well. 

Lata denied her mother’s dominating behavior and the concept of arranged marriages at first. She thought-“India is a free country and we should follow her own heart”.

But society and family peer pressure grapple with just one wish: to choose her husband between her suitors Kabir, Haresh, and Amit.

On the other hand her brother-in-law Maan feels attracted to the older Muslim courtesan Saeeda Bai. The story also focuses on the forbidden love of Maan who is the son of a minister from a Hindu family and almost half her age. 

The story unfolds the vast and large four families shallow drama, exploring the political issues and religious difference of Hindu Muslim and reflect the conflict between tradition and modernity in those times.

What are the characters of the series? 

The Suitable Boy consists of the finest actors and talented actors in the Mira’s Nair directorial web series. 

Tanya Maniktala as Lata Mehra is one of the lead characters of the series. The whole stories revolve around her who grapples to choose her husband. Her beauty lies in her simplicity, honesty, and modesty. She featured in the series Flames as Ishita. 

The Dadak boy Ishaan Khattar played as Maan who is the son of the minister from a Hindu family. Despite born in a Hindu family, he attracted to the Muslim courtesan who almost half of his age. 

Tabu as Saeeda Bai portrays the role of an older Muslim courtesan with the heart of a poet. Her presence magnificent on the screen appreciated by her fans on Twitter. She is a brilliant actor featured in many blockbuster movies.

Mahira Kakkar as Rupa Mehra played the role of Lata’s mother who determined to find her younger daughter a “suitable boy”.

Rasika Dugal as Savita Mehra Kapoor who is the older sister of Lata. Followed the traditional path of arranges marriage with Pran Kapoor played by Gagan Dev Riar. 

She also appeared in Mirzapur playing the role of Bina Tripathi. 

Ram Kapoor plays Mahesh Kapoor who is the Maan’s politician father who disagrees with his son infatuation with a courtesan.

Lata’s three suitable boy and love interests including Danesh Razvi plays Kabir Durrani, Mikhail Sen plays Amit Chatterji and 

Namit Das plays Haresh Khanna. 

Vijay Varma plays Rasheed, the Urdu teacher.

Shubham Saraf plays Firoz Ali Khan as Maan’s best friend. 

Joyeeta Dutta plays Tasneem as the younger sister of courtesan Saeeda Bai.

Randeep Hooda plays Billy Irani’s friend of Lata’s brother, Arun Mehra.
